About SamanTree Medical

SamanTree Medical SA proposes a breakthrough innovation for checking complete tumor removal during surgery: the Histolog® Scanner. This novel imaging modality is a direct support during cancer surgery to achieve the common goal of improving patient quality of life by decreasing rates of re-operation.

The team is fully dedicated to bringing the Gold Standard in the operating room, enabling margin assessment, in real time, at the histological detail.

SamanTree Medical SA was founded in December 2014 and is a spin-off of the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

Following the promising clinical results achieved with its CE mark device, SamanTree Medical SA has recently closed a CHF 9.5 Million Series A financing round for developing its commercial operations.

Board of Directors & Management

Jan Dekker is a director of a number of private companies. Jan began his career at Philips Corporation where he worked from 1973 to 1981. He then joined KPMG Meijburg & Co, where he became Senior Partner in the International Tax Practice.

Bastien is co-founder, and current CEO & Director of SamanTree Medical. He has more than 8 years of experience in technological and business development in the fields of medical devices and microscopy. He holds a MSc degree in Optics, Physics and Engineering from Institut d’Optique Graduate School (France) and a PhD by CEA-Leti (France).

Etienne is co-founder and CTO of the company. He has over 10 years of experience in development of advanced microscopy techniques and 5 years of experience in entrepreneurship. Etienne holds a BSc degree in Physics and a MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, both from Université de Sherbrooke (Canada), as well as a PhD degree in Photonics from EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland).

Malgosia has been active in the field of medical devices for the last 25+ years, and brings extensive experience in sales, marketing, training and regulatory in Europe, the USA and Asia. Malgosia held various senior management positions with companies like Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson, as well as with fast growing start-up companies like Computer Motion Sensimed and KB Medical.

Born in Siena in 1953. Graduated with a degree in bio-engineering at the Milan Polytechnic. After an experience at a Bayer Group company, he started with others the Strategic Plan for the Ansaldo biomedical project, later become Esaote. He has been one of the members of the management since the company started and from 2006 the Esaote’s CEO.

In January 2013, he left Esaote to pursue other personal initiatives. Presently he is a member of the Board of Directors of three Menarini companies, the major Italian Life Sciences Group.

Since April 2012, he has been a member of the Board of the CRF Bank, part of Intesa Group up to February 2019 when CRF Bank has been merged in Intesa.

Since May 2014, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Leonardo/Finmeccanica, the major Italian Aerospace & Defence Group. Since May 2014, he has been President of Toscana Life Science, a Life Sciences accelerator/incubator and healthcare technology promoter Foundation based in Siena. 

In 2015, he co-founded Panakes Partners SGR, an investment company focused on Life Sciences Venture Capital activities: at Panakès, he is currently a Managing Partner of the first Fund, dedicated to Medtech and healthcare IT, investing all over Europe since 2016.

Arnoud de Geus studied mechanical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology, and graduated in the field of mechatronics back in 1994. Arnoud is 53 years old, Married with 2 children and partly lives in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and Nürnberg (Germany).

After his studies, he started working in the high tech industry of the Eindhoven Brainport region where he participated in the engineering of high tech products in the field of semicon, analytical and medical devices. Amongst others, he worked for Oce (Canon) in printer development, Philips Medical Systems in MR diagnosis systems development and for ASML in semicon production equipment development mostly in the field of embedded software development. After this period of about 5 years, he took on management roles. First in the role of project manager, later more general management roles. Occasionally, Arnoud takes on the role of CEO for interim periods.

The last 22 years Arnoud has been working for the Sioux Group, which is a technology and production partner for amongst others previously mentioned companies. Sioux Group has 700 employees, and is active in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Russia, Vietnam and China. The last 15 years Arnoud is part of the Sioux Group board of directors. He is mostly focused on the outside of the company in the form of account management and sales roles and the last couple of years Arnoud has been promoted to the role of Director New Business Development of the Sioux Group. In this role, Arnoud is also responsible for Sioux’s own M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions), and Arnoud has recently been involved in the geographical expansion of Sioux towards Germany by means of acquisitions of a German company which has been added to the Sioux Group. He is currently also managing the German Sioux organization during the integration phase. Besides that Arnoud is part of the Sioux China board.

Since 15 years, Arnoud is also increasingly active in the roadmap process of the product portfolio of Sioux’s own customers. More and more Sioux is also drawn into the investment process of individual business cases, whereby Sioux also takes an active investment role by, by spinning of start-ups from customers, institutes or universities. Initially this was done from within the Sioux supply company. In 2014, the decision was made to split of this investment business from the Sioux supply company into the Sioux High Tech fund by a legal demerger. This fund has invested in various semicon, analytical and medical device companies. Some examples of good exits are Fleetlogic (2014) to TomTom Telematics, Liteq (2017) to Kulicke & Soffa, and PhenomWorld (2017) to ThermoFisher. The first fund had a good IRR and based on this performance Arnoud is currently managing a second fund, which is accredited by the EIF via the Business Angle mechanism. Currently Arnoud is building up a new investment portfolio in this second Sioux High Tech fund.

Dr. Charles S. Carignan is the CEO of SoniVie, and previously served as the Executive Chair and CEO of Rex Bionics, as the President and CEO of BionX Medical Technology (sold to Ottobock), founding President and CEO of NinePoint Medical, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Novasys Medical, Inc. (sold to Roper), Chief Medical Officer at Boston Scientific, and Vice President of clinical research and medical affairs at Conceptus (sold to Bayer).

He received a BA from Yale University and an MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. He trained in general surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

He has served healthcare worldwide participating on committees of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare Camp; Medicaid Services, the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.


Perry is an international business executive with a strong track record of successful business management, innovation and strategy in large/mature businesses and start-ups. He currently is CEO and Founder of 21st Century Business Growth Advisors B.V. Prior this, he was, as CEO of Philips Corporate Venturing, reporting directly to Philips Board of Management.


Jean-Marc brings to SamanTree Medical his extensive experience in international growth management and financing.
Formerly executive with Medtronic, Lysis, Sensimed, KB Medical, he is active since 2003 as an executive, director and consultant for innovative high-tech companies. Jean-Marc spent 8 years as founder and CEO of Sensimed, where he raised over $50M in equity and led the company to develop its radically innovative technology into a robust, validated industrialized product. He then took the position of CEO with KB Medical, a company active in providing robotic assistance for highly accurate spinal surgery procedures, led the company to a successful trade sale with Globus Medical. Since September 2017, Jean-Marc joined the Swiss neurotechnology unicorn MindMaze as Chief Operating Officer. He is also chairman of the strategic advisory board of Berdoz Optic, consultant and financial expert with Platinn and CTI start-up, and active in various other organizations.

Guido is acting as Chief Commercial Officer ad interim for SamanTree Medical and focuses on the market launch planning, execution and strategic partnerships.
He is a senior commercial executive with many years of experience in revenue growth and innovation in medical devices, IVD/diagnostics, Healthcare Informatics and Imaging. Guido has built, scaled up and managed global operations; created compelling, differentiating strategies and value propositions; developed and launched new products; built new channels; and closed large international sales deals of more than €10 million. Guido has deep experience in commercializing disruptive innovations and in growing and professionalizing organizations.
The past ten years, he co-founded, built and managed the Philips Digital Pathology venture resulting in tens of millions of Euro revenue and he founded an online marketplace for innovative genetic diagnostic tests as part of myTomorrows.

Marius is Surgical Pathologist and brings to SamanTree Medical his expertise in digital pathology.
Marius graduated as an MD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1979. After his training at the University of Groningen he was registered as a surgical pathologist in December 1982. He was consultant pathologist at Leiden University and later at the institute of public health in Friesland where he started to explore the possibilities of digital pathology. From 1996 until December 2015 he chaired the department of surgical pathology of the Atrium Medical center in Heerlen and introduced flow cytometry on solid tumors, speech recognition as well as digital pathology as part of daily routine. In 2015 he founded Nap Pathology Consultance to further explore the possibilities of digital pathology across geographical and language borders. Marius has published several scientific papers about the transition from conventional light microscopy to digital pathology and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.
