About SamanTree Medical

SamanTree Medical SA proposes a breakthrough innovation with the will to improve cancer treatment: the Histolog® Scanner. This new imaging modality finds its application along the patient journey, from biopsy taking to surgical diagnostics.

The company was founded in December 2014 and is a spin-off of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Since 2016, the Histolog Scanner is a CE mark product for high resolution imaging of the surface of  fresh tissue. It is based on a novel ultra-fast confocal microscopy technology invented in EPFL in 2010.

Our team


Bastien is co-founder, and current CEO & Director of SamanTree Medical. He is evolving since 2010 as an entrepreneur in the field of medical devices and advanced imaging techniques. He is also co-inventor of the core technology for SamanTree Medical. He holds a MSc degree in Optics, Physics and Engineering from Institut d’Optique Graduate School (France) and a PhD by CEA-Leti (France).

Etienne is co-founder and CTO of the company. He has over 10 years of experience in development of advanced microscopy techniques and 5 years of experience in entrepreneurship. He has boosted the product development from the proof-of-concept to the commercial product, reaching unprecedented performance levels on the market. Etienne holds a BSc degree in Physics and a MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, both from Université de Sherbrooke (Canada), as well as a PhD degree in Photonics from EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland).

Cédric is SamanTree Medical’s VP Sales & Marketing. He has over 15 years as Sales Director EMEA for medical device companies. During his most recent experience at Varian, Angiodynamics and Mauna Kea technologies , he led the sales of innovative equipment in oncology. His career path has given him the ability to launch products with high added value and strengthen his ability to develop new business opportunities. Cedric holds a master degree in Science and also in management.

Oleg is a Chief Medical Officer of the company. He has over 20 years of experience in the medical device industry with a background in clinical cardiac surgery and a successful track record in all aspects of clinical/medical affairs, R&D, and business development. He joined SamanTree Medical from Newronika, where he was serving as a Chief Medical Officer. Prior to Newronika, Dr. Svanidze held executive positions at several medical device companies, including Xeltis, Allergan Medical, Arbor Surgical Technologies, 3F Therapeutics (now Medtronic), Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), and HeartPort (now Edwards Lifesciences). Oleg is a co-author of many scientific publications and holds several patents in the fields of minimally invasive heart valves and medical robotics.

Theophile is VP Finance and Administration. He has over 20 years of experience in corporate finance, M&A and entrepreneurship. After having led finance functions in large industrial groups and worked in more than 10 countries, he co-founded an EPFL spin-off company (Lausanne, Switzerland), participated in various M&A transactions and most recently headed Finance at Lunaphore Technologies, successfully launching a large financing round. He holds two MSc degrees, in accounting and in management. He is an alumni of NEOMA Business School (Reims, France) and IMD Business School (Lausanne, Switzerland).

Board of Directors

Dr. Charles S. Carignan is the CEO of SoniVie, and previously served as the Executive Chair and CEO of Rex Bionics, as the President and CEO of BionX Medical Technology (sold to Ottobock), founding President and CEO of NinePoint Medical, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Novasys Medical, Inc. (sold to Roper), Chief Medical Officer at Boston Scientific, and Vice President of clinical research and medical affairs at Conceptus (sold to Bayer).

He received a BA from Yale University and an MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. He trained in general surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

He has served healthcare worldwide participating on committees of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare Camp; Medicaid Services, the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.


From 1981 until 2013, Fabrizio Landi was co-founder and then part of the Executive Management of Esaote, where he held various positions (up to CEO and General Manager). He is currently a Board Member of Menarini Diagnostics, Firma and Silicon Biosystem (Menarini Group). He was also a board member of several Italian and international corporates, including Bracco US, Banca CR of Florence (part of Banca Intesa Group) and Leonardo-Finmeccanica. Since 2014 he is Chairman of Toscana Life Sciences TLS Foundation in Siena, supporting many biomedical and biopharmaceutical start-ups and no-profit and for-profit pharma and biotech research groups. He holds several positions in various Scientific Committees and is also actively involved in Fondazione R&I, focused on supporting Technology Transfer processes in Italy.

Graduated with a degree in bioengineering at the Milan Polytechnic, Fabrizio has a long career in the Life Science sector, started with Bayer in 1979.

In 2015, he co-founded Panakes Partners SGR, an investment company focused on Life Sciences Venture Capital activities: at Panakès, he is currently a Managing Partner of the first Fund, dedicated to Medtech and healthcare IT, investing all over Europe since 2016.


For more than 20 years, Arnoud De Geus has been working for the Sioux Group, which is a technology and production partner for leading industries. Sioux Group has 700 employees, and has an international reach. During the last 15 years, Arnoud has been part of the Sioux Group board of directors. He is mostly focused on the outside of the company in the form of account management and sales roles and since 2016, Arnoud has been promoted to the role of Director New Business Development of the Sioux Group. Besides that Arnoud is part of the Sioux China board.

He studied mechanical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology, and graduated in the field of mechatronics back in 1994. 

Arnoud is also involved in the geographical expansion of Sioux towards Germany by means of acquisitions of a German company which has been added to the Sioux Group. He is currently managing the German Sioux organization during the integration phase.

Jan Dekker is a director of a number of private companies. Jan began his career at Philips Corporation where he worked from 1973 to 1981. He then joined KPMG Meijburg & Co, where he became Senior Partner in the International Tax Practice.

Malgosia has been active in the field of medical devices for the last 25+ years, and brings extensive experience in sales, marketing, training and regulatory in Europe, the USA and Asia. Malgosia held various senior management positions with companies like Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson, as well as with fast growing start-up companies like Computer Motion Sensimed and KB Medical.

Business Advisors

Perry is an international business executive with a strong track record of successful business management, innovation and strategy in large/mature businesses and start-ups. He currently is CEO and Founder of 21st Century Business Growth Advisors B.V. Prior this, he was, as CEO of Philips Corporate Venturing, reporting directly to Philips Board of Management.

Jean-Marc brings to SamanTree Medical his extensive experience in international growth management and financing.
Formerly executive with Medtronic, Lysis, Sensimed, KB Medical, he is active since 2003 as an executive, director and consultant for innovative high-tech companies. Jean-Marc spent 8 years as founder and CEO of Sensimed, where he raised over $50M in equity and led the company to develop its radically innovative technology into a robust, validated industrialized product. He then took the position of CEO with KB Medical, a company active in providing robotic assistance for highly accurate spinal surgery procedures, led the company to a successful trade sale with Globus Medical. Since September 2017, Jean-Marc joined the Swiss neurotechnology unicorn MindMaze as Chief Operating Officer. He is also chairman of the strategic advisory board of Berdoz Optic, consultant and financial expert with Platinn and CTI start-up, and active in various other organizations.

Guido is acting as Chief Commercial Officer ad interim for SamanTree Medical and focuses on the market launch planning, execution and strategic partnerships.

He is a senior commercial executive with many years of experience in revenue growth and innovation in medical devices, IVD/diagnostics, Healthcare Informatics and Imaging. Guido has built, scaled up and managed global operations; created compelling, differentiating strategies and value propositions; developed and launched new products; built new channels; and closed large international sales deals of more than €10 million. Guido has deep experience in commercializing disruptive innovations and in growing and professionalizing organizations.

The past ten years, he co-founded, built and managed the Philips Digital Pathology venture resulting in tens of millions of Euro revenue and he founded an online marketplace for innovative genetic diagnostic tests as part of myTomorrows.

Medical Advisors

Michael is a breast surgeon and brings to SamanTree Medical his expertise in breast conserving surgery and Public Health Systems.

Michael graduated as an MD at Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf in 2002. He then started his residency at the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Erlangen University Hospital in August 2002, where he was Intern from 2002 to 2008. From 2008 he was a Senior Physician and from 2017 to 2019 the Deputy Clinical Director. In April 2008, he finished the master’s degree course on ‘Management in the Public Health System’. He received his Postdoctoral Lecture Qualification in July 2009. Since March 2019, he has been head of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics at the St. Louise Women’s and Children’s Clinic with the St. Louise Women’s Clinic, Paderborn, and the St. Josefs Hospital, Salzkotten, and head of the Cooperative Breast Center Paderborn and the Gynecological Cancer Center at St. Vincenz.

The focus of his scientific work is breast cancer and gynecological oncology. Michael has been responsible for the organization and management of breast cancer and gynaecological-oncological clinical trials. Moreover, health services research and especially health economics are in the focus of his work. He is member of several societies, e.g. the Breast Commission of the Working Group Gynecological Oncology (AGO e.V.) and the German Society for Mastology (DGS e.V.).

Marius is Surgical Pathologist and brings to SamanTree Medical his expertise in digital pathology.

Marius graduated as an MD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1979. After his training at the University of Groningen he was registered as a surgical pathologist in December 1982. He was consultant pathologist at Leiden University and later at the institute of public health in Friesland where he started to explore the possibilities of digital pathology. From 1996 until December 2015 he chaired the department of surgical pathology of the Atrium Medical center in Heerlen and introduced flow cytometry on solid tumors, speech recognition as well as digital pathology as part of daily routine.

In 2015 he founded Nap Pathology Consultance to further explore the possibilities of digital pathology across geographical and language borders. Marius has published several scientific papers about the transition from conventional light microscopy to digital pathology and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

Moira is a Pathologist specialized in Breast, Endocrine Organs, Prostate, and Skin diseases. She brings to SamanTree Medical her expertise in confocal microscopy for cancer diagnosis.

She studied Medicine and completed her pathology residency at the University of Bologna in 2009. She worked there as a full time Pathologist until 2010, and then became a full time anatomopathologist at the ASMN Reggio Emilia. 

Moira has published >100 papers in peer reviewed journals, she is an international expert in the field of cancer pathology. Since 2012, she has focused her research on confocal microscopy for cancer detection. One of the main themes of her research is improving cancer surgery outcome with innovative approaches designed for the intraoperative assessment.

Aïcha is a Pathologist specialized in breast and ENT pathology and she brings to SamanTree Medical her expertise in the evaluation of new imaging technologies designed for pathology in an intraoperative setting.

Aïcha did her pathology residency at the Gustave Roussy Institute (GRI) in Paris-Villejuif. She became a full time anatomopathologist in 2012 and worked at GRI until July 2019 when she started working as a Pathologist at the SCP Bichat medical laboratory in Paris. 

She has led several research projects with the aim to evaluate novel imaging technologies for medical applications, such as Raman Spectroscopy, ff-OCT, near-infrared spectroscopy, magnetic resonance elastography, and confocal microscopy. She has dedicated her career to improve pathology workflow by adopting new medical imaging techniques or resource optimization.
